In this blog, I am going to be answering the question: How can I be confident with acne? I will be giving you my tips and tricks to being confident even when you have a face full of blemishes and/or scars. Throughout this blog, you might also see how all of this affects your mental health.

Before I get started, I want to mention that acne is a normal part of life, especially for us teens. We are growing up, we are changing, and we have raging hormones. All of these things can cause acne along with many other factors, so DO NOT feel bad that you are experiencing this!

Now, I know quite a bit about acne from my own personal experiences. You all know if you've been watching my videos on YouTube that acne and I are not great friends. I've dealt with acne for over 6 years starting around age 12, and I continue to deal with it now at 18 years old. On the top at the left, you will find a photo of what my face looked like in May of this year.

I tried everything to get rid of my acne, but in my case, I was on a necessary medication that worsened the acne terribly.

I even tried Curology, but unfortunately, my skin did not adapt to it well. The top middle photo is what I looked like a month after starting Curology. The top right photo is a side view of what my face looked like at that time as well.

Everyone's skin is different, so don't be afraid to try Curology. It just didn't work for me.

I've since been able to get off of the medication that was causing my acne and am no longer using many products, including Curology products. My skin is doing a little better now, BUT I still have tons of red marks and a bit of scarring. My point is that I know how it feels to experience acne, so I can tell you first-hand some of the ways you can remain confident even if you have acne.

Now there are tons of ways that people get over the fact that they have acne, but I have 5 specific tips and tricks when it comes to confidence and acne that I feel are the best, especially for teenagers. So let's dive in!

1. A Great Personality Hides Visual Flaws (OWN IT!)

Positivity and happy vibes are 90% of what people remember about you. Other people will want to be around you if you are upbeat and fun. If you lead your life with a smile, people will naturally want to be around you as well. Remember that other people do not care nearly as much as you do when it comes to acne. You are your own worst critic.

2. A Skin Care Routine is a MUST!

A good skin care routine will not necessarily get rid of acne, BUT it helps you feel clean and good inside. This tip is the best tip out of my 5 tips for feeling good in your own skin. Although I cannot promise a good skin care routine will get rid of your acne, it does have the potential to prevent it.

3. Instagram is a LIE! (Stop Comparing)

90% of what you see on Instagram is edited or facetuned or photoshopped, etc. Sooo...STOP comparing yourself to the perfect images you see on Instagram.

Try not to compare yourself to anyone at all. If there are people you compare yourself to in real life, don't do it! Everyone's got a struggle in life. All teens are struggling with something. It might be friendship troubles, relationship challenges, mental health issues, or difficult family matters. For you, it might be acne. It is NOT the end of the world. We’ve all got struggles, and comparing truly gets you nowhere.

4. You are NOT Alone!

So so so so many teens have acne. It is rare for teens to never experience acne at some point in their adolescent years. Remember that you are not the only one, and there are tons of other teens just as frustrated as you.

5. Exercise!

Exercise is proven to reduce stress and release endorphins. (Endorphins are groups of hormones, and releasing these will help your mind stay clear.) Stress is a big cause of acne, so exercising can really help in that area. Also, keeping your emotions in check will help your hormones to stop raging and causing acne.

A good diet (healthy food) can also help your skin, while junky foods might do the opposite. (It is controversial whether or not food affects acne, but I personally see a huge difference when I am eating healthy compared to eating chocolate and candy and junk food.)
